Because some horses are no longer available for inspection, much of our work is appraising horses that we can not see in person. This may be the case with the subject of a legal dispute or horses who have passed away. In these cases, our experts may be able to appraise the horse from photos, videos, and other available records.
If the horse is deceased or stolen, we conduct appraisals under hypothetical conditions. This type of appraisal requires that we 'assume' some facts by using information obtained through various documents and validated by other sources including but not limited to veterinarians, trainers, breed registry officials, local sale barns, or prior owners.
The appraisal report will list any assumptions and limiting conditions.
If you're asking that question, you might need our services. For donations valued greater than $5,000, the IRS requires a certified appraisal. Legal matters including bankruptcy, dissolution of marriage or partnership, and sales disputes often benefit from a certified appraisal. We offer a free 15 minute consultation to determine if we can assist you.
Years of experience in the horse industry, a signficant trove of sales records - many of which pre-date the internet - and relationships with professionals throughout the levels of the horse world allow our team to determine a range of value for your horse. It's not simply searching the web for comparable sales. Appraisals must adhere to USPAP Guidelines and appraisers operate by a strict code of ethics. When you simply must know rather than guess, Sterling Equine Appraisals is your best choice.
